Minimum Subject Requirements for Education Courses in Kenyan Universities Explained

Choosing to pursue an Education course at university is a major step for students who dream of becoming teachers. However, before submitting an application, it is important for learners to clearly understand the minimum subject requirements needed for each course.

Different Bachelor of Education degree programs have specific subject combinations and grade requirements. In most cases, students must score at least a C+ (Plus) in the subjects they intend to teach.

Additionally, one subject can only be counted once in a cluster combination. For many science-based programs, Mathematics Alternative A is compulsory.

For those interested in Bachelor of Education (Arts), applicants must attain a minimum of C+ in English or Kiswahili and Mathematics (Alternative A or B). They must also have at least C+ in two teaching subjects drawn from approved subject groups.

Students applying for Bachelor of Education (Science) are required to score at least C+ in two science subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, or Physics. Science-based education courses tend to have stricter requirements due to the technical nature of the subjects.

Those who wish to pursue Early Childhood Development Education must have relevant humanities subjects like History and Government, Geography, or Religious Education with a minimum grade of C+.

For Special Needs Education (Secondary Option), candidates are required to have two teaching subjects at C+. Students interested in Physical Education and Sports must also meet the C+ requirement in sciences or other approved subject groups.

Language-based degrees such as Bachelor of Education (French), Bachelor of Education (German), and Bachelor of Education (Music) require a minimum of C+ in the specific language or subject, in addition to English or Kiswahili and other approved subjects.

In agriculture-related programs, Bachelor of Education (Agriculture) requires at least a C+ in Mathematics or a science subject. Meanwhile, Bachelor of Science (Agricultural Education and Extension) demands C+ grades in relevant science subjects.

Understanding these requirements early allows students to make informed decisions when selecting their subject combinations in secondary school.

Proper planning increases their chances of qualifying for their preferred Education courses and building successful teaching careers in the future.
