There was a light but dramatic political moment in Taita Taveta County on Tuesday during a rally led by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki in Wundanyi Constituency.
The incident unfolded after Kindiki welcomed Wundanyi MP Danson Mwashako, who is allied to the Wiper Democratic Movement, to address the gathering.
While speaking at the rally, the Deputy President openly urged the legislator to reconsider his political alignment and join the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Kindiki praised Mwashako’s leadership qualities, suggesting that he would be more effective working closely with the government.
Moments later, a section of leaders present at the event attempted to symbolically welcome the MP into the ruling party by placing a UDA-branded cap on his head.
However, in a swift and unexpected reaction, Mwashako removed the cap and threw it away, signaling that he was not ready to make such a political move.
The action triggered laughter among leaders and supporters present, with Kindiki himself seen laughing as the crowd reacted to the dramatic scene.
Despite the humorous turn of events, the Deputy President continued to persuade the MP to work with the government, maintaining a light tone throughout the exchange.
Kindiki further remarked that they could not allow the Wundanyi legislator to associate with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, in what appeared to be a political jab amid shifting alliances.
The rally highlighted the ongoing political realignments and attempts by both government and opposition figures to consolidate support at the grassroots level as the country’s political landscape continues to evolve.
