The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has unveiled a new system designed to make it easier for salaried individuals to file their annual income tax returns ahead of the June 30 deadline.
The initiative targets millions of employees and forms part of efforts to improve efficiency and compliance in tax filing.
On Thursday, March 19, the authority notified workers via SMS about the rollout of a pre-filled returns feature. This system automatically populates key employment income details, reducing the need for manual input.
KRA described the update as a major improvement aimed at simplifying the filing process through automation.
With the new system, taxpayers who log into the iTax platform will find important sections, especially those related to employment income, already completed.
Users will only need to review the details, confirm their accuracy, and submit the returns. This is expected to save time and minimize errors, particularly for individuals relying solely on salaried income.
KRA noted that the move is intended to boost compliance by encouraging timely and accurate filing. The authority has been increasingly adopting digital solutions to streamline its services and reduce the burden on taxpayers.
Taxpayers facing challenges have been advised to seek help through KRA’s customer support channels or visit nearby tax offices.
The agency also stressed the need to carefully verify all pre-filled information before submission to avoid penalties arising from inaccuracies.
This development follows the release of a step-by-step guide on filing returns via the iTax system. The process includes logging in, selecting the correct return type, confirming the filing period, reviewing income and deductions, and submitting the return before downloading an acknowledgement receipt.
As the deadline approaches, KRA is urging salaried Kenyans to file early to avoid last-minute rush. The introduction of pre-filled returns is expected to make the process smoother and improve overall tax compliance nationwide.
