Kenya participated in a major international cybercrime crackdown coordinated by INTERPOL, which successfully dismantled over 45,000 malicious IP addresses and servers used in phishing scams, malware distribution, and ransomware attacks worldwide.
The operation, Synergia III, ran from July 2025 to January 2026, involving law enforcement agencies from 72 countries, including Kenya. INTERPOL reported that the operation led to 94 cross-border arrests, with another 110 suspects under investigation.
Coordinated Global Action
Investigators analyzed intelligence from thousands of suspicious online activities, converting raw cyber data into actionable leads.
These were shared with police units across multiple countries, enabling coordinated enforcement.
INTERPOL emphasized the importance of cross-border collaboration, providing tactical assistance and operational guidance to member nations.
Criminals primarily relied on phishing websites, malware-infected servers, and ransomware campaigns to steal sensitive information such as login credentials, credit card numbers, and personal data.
In Macau, China, authorities uncovered over 33,000 fraudulent websites impersonating casinos, banks, government portals, and payment platforms.
In Togo, West Africa, ten suspects were arrested for running cybercrime rings, including romance scams and sextortion schemes.
In Bangladesh, forty suspects were arrested, and 134 electronic devices confiscated in connection to job scams, loan fraud, and identity theft.
Across all participating countries, 212 electronic devices and servers hosting malicious software and phishing platforms were seized, disrupting cybercriminal operations targeting victims globally.
Kenya’s Role and Capacity Building
Kenya’s National Police Service (NPS) has a long-standing partnership with INTERPOL. As part of capacity building, the NPS launched a permanent INTERPOL curriculum for police officers.
This program trains officers to use global policing databases, secure communication channels, and investigative tools to identify suspects and coordinate cross-border operations efficiently.
The collaboration with INTERPOL strengthens Kenya’s ability to combat transnational cybercrime, safeguard citizens’ digital information, and contribute to global cybersecurity efforts.
This operation highlights the growing need for international cooperation to address increasingly sophisticated cyber threats affecting millions of users worldwide.
