Anne Waiguru, the Governor of Kirinyaga County, has openly expressed interest in becoming Kenya’s next deputy president in the 2027 General Election, a declaration that could place her in direct competition with current Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.
Speaking during a women’s empowerment event in Kariti Ward on March 12, 2026, Waiguru stated that Kirinyaga County deserves a chance to produce the country’s deputy president.
She added that she is confident about negotiating the position with President William Ruto ahead of the next polls.
Distancing From Gachagua’s Current Political Path
During the event, Waiguru also addressed her previous political support for former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. While she acknowledged backing him in the past, she distanced herself from his current political direction.
The governor urged leaders and residents from the Mt Kenya region to continue supporting the ruling Kenya Kwanza Alliance, arguing that alignment with the government would help maintain stability and accelerate development.
Highlighting Experience and Track Record
Waiguru emphasized her leadership experience and achievements while serving in both county and national roles. She noted that under her administration, Kirinyaga has grown into an economic hub within the region.
Before becoming governor, Waiguru served in several national positions, including Cabinet Secretary and advisor on key government reforms.
Her latest statement suggests a shift from earlier speculation that she might pursue a Senate seat, indicating a stronger focus on national leadership.
Political Competition Emerging
Waiguru’s declaration introduces new political competition within the Mt Kenya region, where the deputy presidency is considered a significant political prize.
Deputy President Kindiki, who assumed office after Gachagua’s impeachment, has previously dismissed suggestions that he would serve only one term and has expressed confidence that the government will win re-election in 2027.
Growing Political Jostling in Mt Kenya
Political analysts say Waiguru’s move may be part of a broader strategy to strengthen her influence within President Ruto’s political circle.
By presenting her ambitions as a matter of regional representation and negotiation rather than confrontation, she may be seeking to rally support within the Mt Kenya bloc.
As the 2027 elections draw closer, the announcement highlights growing competition among regional leaders seeking to secure key positions in Kenya’s future political landscape.
