Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has alleged that police officers involved in the controversial Witima ACK Church incident in Othaya, Nyeri County, were merely transferred from their stations instead of facing immediate legal action.
Speaking during a media briefing�, Gachagua said the transfers were part of administrative measures following the incident, rather than criminal proceedings at this stage.
The Witima incident, which drew widespread political attention, involved allegations of excessive force by security agencies during a church gathering. Opposition leaders have raised concerns over accountability and the role of senior police officers in the event.
Gachagua further linked the transfers to the incident, claiming that more than ten officers connected to the case were reassigned across the country.
He suggested that the reshuffles were not routine administrative moves but a response to the controversy surrounding the Witima events.
Among those redeployed is George Seda, the former Nairobi Regional Police Commander, who was moved to another region.
Authorities described the changes as a standard reshuffle aimed at improving operational efficiency, but Gachagua’s statements imply a direct link to the church incident.
The matter has also taken a legal and political turn. In February, opposition leaders announced intentions to pursue private legal action against certain police officers and two Members of Parliament allegedly connected to the incident, reflecting growing pressure for accountability outside official state mechanisms.
