Eugene Wamalwa: Opposition Cuts Short Ukambani Tour to Support Gikomba Traders

Former Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa has announced that the opposition will scale down its ongoing political tour in Ukambani to show solidarity with traders affected by the recent crackdown at Gikomba Market.

Speaking during a rally, Wamalwa said opposition leaders had agreed to reduce their planned five-day tour by two days in order to travel to Nairobi and support traders seeking justice in court.

He explained that the move is aimed at standing with small-scale business owners who suffered significant losses during the controversial night operation.

Wamalwa also revealed that a team of lawyers affiliated with the opposition had already been dispatched to Nairobi to initiate legal proceedings on behalf of the affected traders.

The legal action, he said, seeks to challenge what he described as unlawful destruction of property and violation of traders’ rights.

According to the former CS, the situation at Gikomba goes beyond politics and touches on justice and protection of livelihoods, especially for informal sector players who form a key part of the country’s economy.

He accused the government of failing to protect traders and warned that the opposition would continue to push for accountability and compensation through the courts.

Wamalwa’s remarks come amid increasing pressure on the administration of William Ruto, with several leaders calling for investigations into the circumstances surrounding the operation.

The decision to prioritize legal action marks a shift in strategy by the opposition, moving from political mobilization to institutional channels in pursuit of justice for those affected.
