Davis Chirchir Orders Probe Into Deadly Nyeri Crash That Claimed 16 Lives

Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir has ordered a full investigation into a tragic road accident in Nyeri County that left 16 people dead.
The fatal crash occurred on Saturday evening near Dedan Kimathi University when a matatu collided head-on with a lorry.

According to authorities, 15 people died on the spot, while one more succumbed to injuries on Sunday.

In a statement, Chirchir directed the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and other enforcement agencies to thoroughly investigate the cause of the accident and take firm action against anyone found to have violated traffic laws.

“The Government remains committed to strengthening road safety measures, enforcing compliance, and ensuring accountability to prevent such tragedies,” the CS said.

He also sent condolences to the families who lost their loved ones and wished a quick recovery to those injured in the crash.

Elizabeth Vivi confirmed that several bodies have already been identified, while others remain at Nyeri Referral Hospital awaiting identification by family members.

Reports indicate that three adults and one child survived the accident.

Witnesses said the crash happened after the lorry driver tried to avoid hitting a boda boda, leading to a head-on collision with a matatu that was heading toward Mweiga.

The government has now warned motorists to be extra cautious on the roads, adding that enforcement operations, audits, and compliance checks will be intensified across the country to prevent similar incidents in the future.
