Bishop Ben Kiengei Faces Backlash After Hosting President Ruto at JCM Church

Bishop Benson Gathungu Kamau, widely known as Bishop Ben Kiengei, has revealed the intense scrutiny he faced after inviting President William Ruto to his Jesus Compassion Ministries (JCM) church in Ruiru.

Despite warnings from his brother and church associates about potential online backlash and “curses,” Kiengei said he remained steadfast, noting that criticism has been a constant throughout his life and ministry.

During a church service, Kiengei recounted how his brother, a pastor in a rural area, expressed concern over negative reactions on social media platforms like TikTok.

The brother questioned whether the President would attend given the intensity of online criticism. Kiengei, however, brushed off the warnings, highlighting his long history of handling criticism and maintaining focus on his mission.

The event took place on February 22, 2026, as part of JCM’s third anniversary celebrations. President Ruto attended with a heavy security detail, was welcomed with a red carpet, and participated in the service alongside key church groups.

During the visit, the President pledged KSh 8 million to the church—KSh 3 million for a three-year bursary for needy children and KSh 5 million for a community initiative modeled after the NYOTA program, which has benefited 120,000 people.

High-profile officials accompanied Ruto, including ICT Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo, Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi, and MPs Sabina Chege and Kimani Ichung’wah. However, the visit sparked outrage online, especially among young Kenyans who accused Kiengei of hypocrisy.

Critics argued that hosting the President contradicted his previous stance during July 2025 anti-government protests, when he presided over the burial of Boniface Kariuki, a youth protester, and vowed not to allow politicians on his pulpit.

Social media reactions were intense, with some likening Kiengei to Judas for allegedly betraying the sacrifices of Gen Z during the protests. The backlash extended within the church; Pastor Charles Wachira of JCM USA resigned, citing concerns that leadership decisions undermined advocacy for justice and accountability.

Kiengei defended his decision, stating that criticism and opposition have always been part of his journey and that he remains committed to his ministry despite external pressures.

The incident underscores the challenges religious leaders face when balancing spiritual work with political engagements in a highly scrutinized environment.
