Azimio Leaders Oppose Plan to Select 2027 Flagbearer Through Closed-Door Retreat

A section of leaders within the Azimio la Umoja Coalition has opposed reported plans to select the coalition’s 2027 presidential flagbearer through a closed-door retreat, warning that the move could deepen divisions within the opposition.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, the leaders insisted that the process of choosing a presidential candidate must be open, transparent, and inclusive to ensure unity ahead of the 2027 General Election.

They warned that any attempt to handpick a candidate in private meetings would amount to imposing a “boardroom candidate,” a situation they say could alienate key coalition members and grassroots supporters.

Reports suggest that discussions were underway for a retreat to decide the coalition’s next presidential flagbearer. However, dissenting leaders dismissed the idea, arguing that such a critical decision cannot be left to a small group of individuals.

National Liberal Party Secretary General Omondi K’Oyoo urged Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka to abandon what he termed exclusionary tactics and instead allow all coalition partners to participate in the decision-making process.

He stressed that a “boardroom candidate” would not reflect the will of the wider coalition and could weaken Azimio’s chances against President William Ruto in 2027.

Dr Augustus Kyalo Muli echoed similar sentiments, saying the coalition must prioritize consensus and inclusivity to produce a strong and widely accepted candidate.

Another leader, Saulo Busolo, warned that secrecy in selecting the flagbearer would damage Azimio’s credibility and create internal mistrust at a time when unity is needed.

The leaders maintained that only a participatory and transparent process would ensure cohesion within the coalition as it prepares for the next general election.
