East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Winnie Odinga has stirred fresh political debate after sharing a cryptic biblical message as leadership tensions continue within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
Winnie posted a verse from 1 Timothy 6:10 on Facebook, which states that “the love of money is the root of all evil.” The post came without explanation but quickly drew attention from ODM supporters and political observers, many interpreting it as a subtle reference to the party’s ongoing internal struggles.
Her message arrives months after her uncle, Oburu Oginga, assumed ODM leadership on October 15, 2025, following the death of longtime party leader Raila Odinga. Since then, the party has split into two rival camps:
A faction aligned with Oburu, supported by leaders such as Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga and Suna East MP Junet Mohammed, backing cooperation with President William Ruto’s UDA administration.
An opposing camp led by ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna, alongside Siaya Governor James Orengo and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, advocating for the party to remain firmly in opposition.
Winnie has publicly aligned herself with Sifuna’s faction and recently appeared at his press conference contesting his alleged removal from party leadership.
Although she did not directly connect her scripture post to the ODM power struggle, the timing has intensified speculation that it was a pointed reflection on the motivations behind the party’s internal contest.
As ODM navigates its post-Raila era, Winnie’s message underscores the heightened tensions and ideological crossroads facing the movement.
