Speculation as Some Police Get Promotions After Nandi Pool Table Assault

Senator Samson Cherargei has strongly condemned a recent incident of police brutality in Nandi Hills after CCTV footage surfaced showing officers violently attacking youth at a local pool hall.

The video, which has circulated widely on social media, shows uniformed officers entering the recreational venue with guns and batons, forcing patrons to the ground, and striking them repeatedly.

Cherargei described the actions as a clear violation of human rights. He noted that the young men had committed no crime, emphasizing that playing pool is not an offense under Kenyan law.

According to the Senator, such behavior goes against Article 244 of the Constitution, which requires police officers to act professionally while respecting human rights.

The Senator also raised concerns over systemic impunity in the police service. He highlighted that some senior officers connected to the incident have since been promoted or transferred to other stations, raising questions about accountability.

Cherargei criticized the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) for failing to act decisively in past cases of misconduct. He pointed out that previous incidents in Nandi County, including unlawful killings and enforced disappearances, went unpunished, creating a culture where officers feel untouchable.

Cherargei called on Inspector General Douglas Kanja to immediately suspend the officers seen in the footage and allow independent investigations to proceed.

He also urged the Senate Committee on National Security to investigate the matter without delay and ensure that justice is served for the victims. View_more...
