In Kakamega County, a family is crying for justice after a shocking incident where an area chief allegedly stormed their home and brutally assaulted a 20-year-old pregnant girl during what was said to be an illicit brew operation.
The incident has left the family in pain and the community in anger, with many calling for immediate action against those involved.
According to reports, the incident happened on Tuesday when the victim, identified as Mercy Akinyi, was at home with her younger sister. Their mother had gone to a nearby village to look for a casual job so that she could provide food for the family.
At around 11:30 a.m., the area chief allegedly arrived at their home together with four men, claiming they were searching for illegal alcohol. They reportedly said they had received information that illicit brew was being sold at the homestead.
An eyewitness said that Akinyi and her younger sister politely explained to the chief that there was no alcohol being sold in their home. They also explained that their mother survives on casual jobs and that their father passed away six years ago, leaving the family to struggle on their own. Despite their explanation, the situation reportedly turned violent.
It is alleged that one of the men who had come with the chief hit the 20-year-old girl on the head using a belt, causing her to lose consciousness.
While she was lying helpless on the ground, the chief is accused of stomping on her swollen stomach before telling her men to leave, saying the girl’s mother would come back and take her to hospital.
By the time neighbors raised an alarm, the chief and her team had already left. Akinyi was rushed to a hospital in Eldoret, where doctors said her condition was critical.
She was later referred to a Nairobi hospital, where she was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Sadly, reports indicate that she lost her unborn baby due to the injuries she sustained.
Further reports claim that the alleged attack was not truly about illicit brew, but was connected to a past issue. It is alleged that Akinyi became pregnant after being involved with a 40-year-old man.
When her mother first reported the matter to the chief, no action was taken. The family later went to the police, and the case reached court, almost costing the chief her job.
The assault case has now been reported to the police as investigations continue, while Akinyi remains in hospital fighting for her life.
