Ruto Warns Security Officers Against Harassing Citizens

President William Ruto has delivered a strong message to members of Kenya’s security services, urging them to uphold professionalism and treat citizens with dignity while executing their duties.

Speaking at a public event, the Head of State condemned reported cases where officers have been accused of harassment, intimidation, and the use of excessive force against civilians.

“Wacha kusukuma wananchi,” the President said firmly, reminding officers that their mandate is to protect the public, not mistreat them.

Call for Professionalism

Ruto noted that the government has invested significantly in modernising the security sector through improved equipment, training, and enhanced welfare.

However, he cautioned that these investments would lose meaning if officers fail to demonstrate discipline and integrity in their daily work.

He emphasized that professionalism must define every security agency and that trust between law enforcement and citizens is essential for national stability.

Accountability Measures

The President directed senior commanders to take responsibility for the conduct of officers under their command. He warned that any officer found engaging in brutality, corruption, or harassment would face strict disciplinary action, including possible dismissal.

His remarks come amid heightened public debate over police accountability, with human rights groups and civil society organisations pushing for reforms to address alleged abuses.

Many Kenyans have welcomed the President’s tough stance, though some have called for concrete implementation measures to ensure accountability.

As Kenya advances its development agenda, Ruto reiterated that a disciplined and citizen-centered security service is crucial.

“Our officers must remember they serve the people of Kenya, and they must do so with honor.”
