A Filipino woman working in Qatar has gone public with claims that her Kenyan boyfriend allegedly disappeared after learning she was pregnant — a situation that has stirred strong reactions online.
According to Joan, who resides in Doha, she met the man, identified as Martin Kiptoo, through a mutual friend. She says their relationship developed quickly over six months, during which he introduced her to members of his family virtually and shared details about his background.
Joan claims the relationship changed after she informed him that she was expecting a child. She alleges that he cut short his stay in Qatar, returned to Kenya, and blocked her on WhatsApp and other social media platforms.
“I feel abandoned and stressed. He hasn’t reached out since I told him about the pregnancy,” she shared in videos posted online.
Despite the alleged abandonment, Joan proceeded with the pregnancy and has since given birth.
She named her child with a Kenyan name and created a TikTok account to document her motherhood journey. Her videos have since attracted sympathy and support from Kenyans and others online.
Online Reactions and Wider Concerns
The story has sparked debate about the risks associated with long-distance relationships among foreign workers in the Gulf region.
Commentators note that migrant workers may face unique vulnerabilities, particularly where legal protections and social support systems are limited.
Observers also point out that similar cases have previously surfaced, highlighting recurring concerns around accountability, cross-border relationships, and the emotional toll on partners left behind.
While the allegations remain one side of the story, the case underscores broader conversations around responsibility, communication, and the complexities of relationships formed abroad.
