President William Ruto has publicly accused his predecessor, former President Uhuru Kenyatta, of financing rebellion within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
The claims, made on January 10 during a meeting with Members of the Siaya County Assembly at the Eldoret State Lodge, represent the first direct political confrontation between the two leaders since Ruto assumed office.
According to attending MCAs, Ruto alleged that Kenyatta was using financial resources to influence some ODM leaders to oppose the national government and create divisions within the party.
Siaya Governor James Orengo was specifically mentioned, with Ruto urging him not to be swayed by money or external political influences.
“The President said if Governor Orengo has any grievances, he should raise them directly with him instead of being influenced by external forces,” said Alego Central MCA David Ragen.
The meeting, attended by 41 of the 42 Siaya MCAs and led by Speaker George Okode, also included Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi and Interior Principal Secretary Dr Raymond Omollo, while Governor Orengo, his deputy William Oduol, and area MPs were absent.
Ruto emphasized unity under the broad-based government, highlighting the need for collaboration between national and county governments to drive development.
Analysts view his remarks as a significant development in Kenya’s political realignments ahead of the 2027 General Election, signalling potential rifts within ODM and its interactions with the ruling Kenya Kwanza administration.
