Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has urged the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to shift its focus from opposition politics and prepare to take power in the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during the Linda Ground Tours event in Bwiti, Lunga Lunga Constituency, Kwale County, Wanga said the party has spent many years outside government and must now position itself as a serious contender for national leadership.
She noted that ODM has built strong support across the country and should no longer be content playing a secondary role. According to her, the party must either form the next government or be part of a strong coalition that will lead the country after 2027.
Wanga also called on ODM’s acting leader, Oburu Oginga, to continue engaging other political players with similar development agendas.
She emphasized the need for structured talks with President William Ruto and his allies, saying negotiations should be based on strength and clear goals.
Her remarks come at a time when ODM has been redefining its political path following the death of party leader Raila Odinga. Several ODM members have already joined the Kenya Kwanza administration, taking up Cabinet positions in what has been described as a broad-based government.
At a recent delegates meeting in Mombasa, Oburu signaled that ODM is eyeing a senior position in any future power-sharing arrangement. The Deputy President seat has emerged as a key target as the party reorganizes ahead of the next election cycle.
As Kenya watches the opposition reposition itself, Wanga’s comments highlight a shift from protest politics to strategic engagement, signaling that ODM is serious about reclaiming influence in the country’s governance.
