Nyong’o Urges Unity in ODM Amid Growing Internal Tensions

Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o has called for unity and mutual respect within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) as the party navigates a period of internal strain.

In a statement shared on his official X account, Nyong’o reaffirmed his commitment to ODM’s founding principles of democracy, inclusivity, and social justice.

A pioneer Secretary General and one of the party’s founding members, he described himself as a custodian of its core values and urged leaders and members alike to prioritize harmony over division.

Internal Challenges

Nyong’o’s remarks come amid reported disagreements within the party over its leadership direction, its relationship with the national government, and broader succession debates following the passing of former leader Raila Odinga.

Different factions have emerged, with some advocating for a return to a more assertive opposition stance, while others favor alternative strategic alignments ahead of future elections.

The developments have triggered calls for dialogue to prevent deeper fractures within the party.

Call for Respect and Dialogue

The Kisumu governor emphasized that mutual respect among members is essential to safeguarding ODM’s identity and relevance in championing democratic reforms and equitable development.

He warned that unresolved internal disputes could weaken the party’s ability to effectively represent the interests of ordinary citizens.

Political observers suggest that interventions by senior figures such as Nyong’o could help stabilize the party during this transitional phase.

By reminding members of shared ideals and collective history, his appeal seeks to refocus attention on unity as the foundation for future growth.

As ODM navigates this critical chapter, Nyong’o’s message underscores a central theme: preserving cohesion within the party is vital to maintaining its influence in Kenya’s evolving political landscape.
