Drama as Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi Rally in Kakamega Draws Huge Crowds Despite Disruption Attempts

On February 21, 2026, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna led the Linda Mwananchi rally in Kakamega County, drawing a massive crowd of supporters despite attempts to disrupt the gathering.

The rally, part of the “Protect the Citizen” campaign within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), marked a significant moment in Kenya’s evolving political landscape as the country edges closer to the 2027 General Election.

Tear Gas, Tension and Resilience

The event kicked off at Amalemba Grounds under tense conditions. Shortly after Sifuna began addressing the crowd, tear gas was reportedly lobbed into the venue, causing temporary chaos. Some attendees fled while a few sustained minor injuries.

Leaders present at the rally, including Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Siaya Governor James Orengo, and ODM executive member Winnie Odinga, claimed that external forces were behind the disruption in a bid to undermine the movement.

Despite the confusion, Sifuna urged calm and restraint. “Do not attack the police. With your prayers and by the will of God, we stand here today,” he appealed, as the crowd gradually regained composure and the rally continued.
“Sea of Humanity” and Rising Political Momentum

Eyewitnesses described the turnout as a “sea of humanity,” with supporters chanting “Sisi ndio Sifuna” (We are Sifuna), signaling growing grassroots backing for the Nairobi Senator.

The rally focused on key issues including party unity, holding the government accountable, and strategizing ahead of the 2027 elections.

Sifuna reiterated ODM’s commitment to fielding a presidential candidate and announced plans to take the Linda Mwananchi campaign nationwide after Ramadan.

Analysts Weigh In

Political analyst Herman Manyora praised Sifuna’s mobilization efforts, describing the Kakamega event as highly successful.

In his commentary, Manyora suggested that the rally’s momentum could reshape Kenya’s political dynamics and potentially unsettle State House.

He also warned that attempts to downplay or suppress the emerging movement could backfire, drawing parallels with past political miscalculations, including the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Fresh Controversy Emerges

The rally’s drama did not end there. Reports emerged that university students protested the following day, alleging they had been mobilized to attend the event without compensation.

Additionally, a man accused of attempting to disrupt the rally was reportedly rescued by security officers after being confronted by the crowd.

As the political temperature rises, the Kakamega rally underscores intensifying alignments and contestations within the opposition space — setting the stage for what could be a high-stakes journey toward 2027.
