Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen appeared before the joint Senate and National Assembly Committees on Energy on Thursday, February 12, to brief lawmakers on the government’s security preparedness for the upcoming oil production in the South Lokichar Basin.
The committees, chaired by Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Oginga and Nakuru East MP David Gikaria, received a detailed presentation on the measures put in place to safeguard this strategic national project.
CS Murkomen emphasized that no development initiative in the country would be allowed to stall due to security concerns. He assured legislators that the government is committed to ensuring the seamless implementation of the oil project, which is expected to generate employment and accelerate development in the Turkana region.
“We have put in place robust security arrangements covering production sites, storage facilities, and designated crude oil transportation routes,” Murkomen said.
He was accompanied by Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, Internal Security Principal Administrative Secretary Jacob Narengo, and other senior government officials.
The delegation reassured lawmakers that every effort is being made to prevent disruptions and guarantee the safety of personnel and infrastructure.
The CS highlighted the economic and developmental significance of the South Lokichar Basin oil project and stressed that collaboration with local communities and security agencies will be key to maintaining stability and supporting the project’s progress.
Lawmakers welcomed the briefing, noting that proactive security planning is essential for national projects of such magnitude.
With these measures in place, the government aims to ensure that the oil sector contributes meaningfully to job creation, regional development, and Kenya’s broader economic growth.
