Tragedy in Ngara as Bus Carrying Teachers Overturns, Killing 15 After KUPPET Elections

A tragic road accident in Ngara, Nairobi, has claimed the lives of at least 15 teachers after a bus they were travelling in overturned.

The teachers were returning from Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) elections when the incident occurred, plunging the city and the teaching fraternity into mourning.

According to eyewitness accounts, the bus lost control after allegedly developing brake failure. A police officer who was nearby reportedly attempted to alert the driver about the danger, but the warning came too late.

Moments later, the vehicle veered off the road, plunged into a ditch, and overturned violently.

The impact was devastating, with 15 teachers dying on the spot. Several other passengers sustained serious injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals, where some are receiving critical care.

Residents who arrived at the scene described a horrifying situation marked by panic, blood, and cries for help. Rescue teams, alongside members of the public, worked tirelessly to free trapped victims from the wreckage.

“It was terrifying. The bus flipped, and people were trapped inside. We tried to help, but many had already died,” one eyewitness said.

Another resident added that the scene was emotionally overwhelming and deeply heartbreaking.

Traffic police and emergency response teams arrived shortly after the accident and immediately began rescue and recovery operations.

The wreckage was later cleared to allow investigations and restore traffic flow in the area.

Preliminary reports point to mechanical failure—particularly brake malfunction—as the likely cause of the crash.

However, police have launched a full investigation to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the accident and determine whether safety measures were ignored.

KUPPET has expressed deep sorrow following the loss of its members, sending messages of condolence to the affected families and the wider teaching community.

The tragic incident has once again raised concerns over road safety, vehicle maintenance, and the welfare of public servants travelling for official duties. Kenyans continue to mourn the lives lost as investigations continue.
