Rescue teams have recovered one body from the rubble of a collapsed 16-storey building in South C, Nairobi, as the search for a second victim enters its third day.
The building, located along Muhoho Road, collapsed at approximately 5 a.m. on Friday, January 2, trapping at least two people under the debris.
Multi-agency teams, including the Kenya Red Cross, the National Disaster Management Unit (NMDU), and the National Police Service, have been working carefully to locate the remaining victim.
Lang’ata MP Phelix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o, described the incident as a tragic start to the year.
“This is a tragic and unacceptable way to begin the year. A 16-storey building under construction collapsed along Muhoho Road, leaving several people trapped beneath the rubble,” he said.
Embakasi East MP Babu Owino called for stricter safety regulations.
“We demand stronger enforcement mechanisms in Nairobi City County to ensure every structure meets the highest safety standards. Lives cannot be rebuilt, but systems can,” he stated.
The Kenya Red Cross confirmed that the area remains cordoned off as rescue operations continue. Authorities have also expressed concern about a nearby building, which may be at risk due to structural movements caused by the collapse.
The National Construction Authority (NCA) will assess its safety once the response teams finish operations on the first and ground floors.
Residents in the area have been advised to remain vigilant while search and rescue operations continue.
