Ministry Extends Grade 10 Placement Review Deadline to Allow Transfers

The Ministry of Education has extended the deadline for Grade 10 placement reviews, giving parents and learners until January 16 to request transfers to their preferred senior schools.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba said the extension is intended to address concerns from parents whose children were placed in schools far from home or in institutions below their academic level. Previously, parents had been given until January 9 to submit transfer requests.

“The admissions are managed through the Kenya Education Management Information System (KEMIS), linked to the headquarters, with approvals made at various levels,” CS Ogamba explained.

“We have given parents extra time to ensure the placement process is seamless and each learner can join the school of their choice, so learning can proceed smoothly in two weeks.”

Addressing Parent Concerns

Some parents had raised complaints about children being assigned to distant day schools or schools that do not match their academic performance.

Ogamba noted that while the automated system has worked smoothly for most learners, the extension allows officials to process transfer requests efficiently.

Officials at the ministry have been working since December to facilitate transfers in line with the government’s goal of achieving 100 percent transition for learners.

National School Upgrades

The CS made the announcement while monitoring Grade 10 admissions at Kamahuha Girls High School in Murang’a, recently upgraded to a national school.

He highlighted that the first student admitted to the school under its new status comes from Kilifi County, underscoring its national reach.

Kamahuha Girls High has been significantly supported by government investments, including the construction of 1,600 laboratories nationwide.

Area MP Mary Waithera, an alumna of the school, praised the government for the upgrade and announced plans through her NG-CDF to build a modern dining hall to ease congestion.

The Grade 10 cohort marks the pioneer group under the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system, comprising 1,130,459 learners.

Kenya’s 9,500 senior schools are categorized to ensure equitable access based on academic pathways, gender, accommodation, and special needs.
