Kiambu Governor Wamatangi Alleges Political Motives Behind Nyayo Stadium Demolitions

Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi has condemned the demolition of several businesses linked to him near Nyayo National Stadium, claiming the move was politically motivated to derail his 2027 gubernatorial bid.

Speaking at the scene on Wednesday morning, under heavy police presence, Wamatangi insisted that he was the legitimate owner of the demolished properties and described the operation as a form of political persecution.

"I began here as a small boy selling tea and mandazis and eventually built the businesses that were destroyed. This is purely political, intended to intimidate me and silence my voice," the governor said.

Eyewitnesses reported that police fired live bullets and deployed teargas during the demolition, creating an atmosphere of fear among those present. Wamatangi, however, vowed to continue his political ambitions, stating, "I will vie for the governorship without fear or favour. Intimidation will not deter me."

The governor also emphasized his commitment to legal and peaceful avenues, choosing not to seek revenge. He noted that he holds a 65-year lease on the land from Kenya Railways and has been paying rent consistently, dismissing any claims of default.

Wamatangi revealed that he had received an early warning about the demolitions but could not visit the site due to reports of gunfire, which he feared could have been targeting him directly. He further claimed that no formal notice had been issued to him or his team prior to the operation.

The demolitions, carried out early Wednesday, involved bulldozers and excavators flattening car yards, car washes, restaurants, and other commercial properties along Douglas Wakiihiru Road behind Nyayo National Stadium.

Authorities stated that the operation was part of an upcoming infrastructure project, though Wamatangi maintains the action was politically motivated.
