IG Douglas Kanja Responds to Gachagua and United Opposition Over Othaya Church Incident

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has responded to concerns raised by Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua and the United Opposition following an incident that occurred at Othaya Church on Sunday, January 25, 2026.

In an update shared on the National Police Service (NPS) official X (formerly Twitter) account, the service confirmed that IG Kanja held a meeting with leaders of the United Opposition at his office.

According to the statement, the Inspector General was accompanied by his two deputies, Eliud Lagat and Gilbert Masengeli, as well as John Onyango, who represented the Director of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). Other senior officers from the NPS headquarters were also present during the meeting.

The National Police Service stated that IG Kanja formally received a petition from the United Opposition leadership concerning the Othaya Church incident.

He assured them that the matter would be investigated thoroughly and reaffirmed the police service’s commitment to political neutrality and serving all Kenyans without fear or favour.

However, the NPS also emphasized the importance of cooperation, noting that political leaders should always notify the police in advance of public meetings and gatherings organized by the United Opposition.

IG Kanja further stressed that close cooperation between the police and political leaders would help ensure smooth investigations and the maintenance of law and order.

The meeting comes amid heightened political tension following the church incident, which had sparked strong reactions from opposition leaders who accused security agencies of bias.
