Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has reignited debate on leadership and development in northern Kenya, calling on regional leaders to focus on delivering real services instead of political propaganda.
Gachagua urged leaders from counties such as Wajir and Mandera to properly utilise taxpayers’ money to improve education, healthcare and other key social amenities. He insisted that public resources should uplift local communities rather than benefit a few individuals living comfortably in Nairobi.
The former Deputy President also dismissed claims of regional hostility, noting that northern Kenya and the Mt Kenya region have historically shared strong economic ties, particularly through trade and business, which have helped strengthen the national economy.
He made the remarks as he announced plans to engage residents through local radio stations in the region, a move many believe will expose leadership failures and bring neglected issues into the national spotlight.
Gachagua criticised leaders he accused of abandoning their constituents while misusing public funds, saying such behaviour has trapped many northern communities in poverty and poor living standards.
He maintained that northern Kenya can achieve meaningful development if leaders commit to responsible governance and prioritise education, infrastructure and social services for the benefit of their people.
