Deputy President Kithure Kindiki was unable to attend Monday’s Kimalel Goat Auction in Baringo County due to illness, Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku confirmed.
Speaking during the event, which was attended by President William Ruto and other senior leaders, Ruku conveyed Kindiki’s apologies and greetings to the people of Baringo.
“Dear Your Excellency, President, I have been sent by your deputy, who is sick. He asked me to send his greetings to the people of Baringo for the goat auction,” Ruku told attendees.
Ruku further revealed that the DP had sent funds to purchase goats for Christmas.
“So if you notice the absence of the deputy president, just know I am here on his behalf,” he added.
Kindiki’s absence had sparked online speculation, which Ruku’s statement has now clarified. However, the CS did not provide further details about the nature of Kindiki’s illness.
The DP’s last public engagement was on December 19, when he presided over the passing out of 147 cadet officers and 103 junior officers at the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Law Enforcement Academy in Manyani, Taita Taveta County.
During the ceremony, Kindiki directed the Tourism Ministry to work with all 47 county governments to operationalize dormant national wildlife reserves under county management.
A day earlier, he accompanied President Ruto to officially open the Affordable Housing Project in Mukuru Kwa Njenga and the New Mukuru Level 4 Hospital.
Kindiki, who was sworn in as deputy president in November last year, has maintained a busy schedule, representing the Head of State at various official functions.
Meanwhile, President Ruto attended the Kimalel Goat Auction alongside other senior leaders, including Energy CS Opiyo Wandayi and Majority Leaders in the National Assembly and Senate, Kimani Ichung’wah and Aaron Cheruyiot, respectively.
The Kimalel Goat Auction remains a major annual livestock event, connecting local pastoralists with buyers and drawing prominent government officials and politicians each year.
