Tanzania is preparing for its general elections on 29 October 2025, in which citizens will vote for the president, parliamentarians, and local leaders. However, the political atmosphere has been marred by growing reports of intimidation and repression.
Father Nikata, a Catholic priest and lecturer at St Augustine University of Tanzania, was reported missing in early October. He has now been found alive in the Ruvuma Region after a harrowing ordeal.
According to reports, Father Nikata was abducted by a special squad, allegedly targeting individuals critical of President Samia Suluhu. During his captivity, he was reportedly forced to ingest poison and then abandoned in a forest.
Observers note that this incident highlights a broader pattern of arbitrary arrests, media restrictions, and silencing of dissenting voices, raising concerns over the increasingly hostile environment ahead of the elections.
Authorities are yet to provide a full explanation regarding the abduction, but the priest’s survival has sparked outrage and calls for urgent measures to protect citizens and political opponents from such attacks.
