A tense scene unfolded on the Kisii-Miruka Highway on Saturday after a police Land Cruiser collided with a Nation Media Group van near Nyagonyi in Kisii County. What began as a routine return from a fundraiser quickly turned into a standoff between journalists and police officers under light afternoon rain.
The crash occurred shortly after noon as journalists were returning from a fundraiser led by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba, which had drawn several leaders and residents supporting local education projects.
Witnesses said the police Land Cruiser, marked KBA 552Y, hit the back of the white Toyota Hiace van carrying Nation Media reporters. The impact badly damaged the van’s rear bumper and door, while the police car suffered minor dents.
All five people in the media van—including four journalists and their driver—escaped without serious injuries. The police officers in the Land Cruiser were also unharmed.
Moments later, officers called in a towing truck from Rioma Police Station to remove the damaged van. However, the journalists refused to allow it, forming a human barrier around the vehicle. They insisted that the car should not be moved until an official investigation was conducted.
Officers tried to push through, but the media team stood firm, filming and taking notes as rain fell. Traffic built up along the highway as curious onlookers gathered, some cheering the journalists for their stand.
The confrontation lasted nearly an hour before senior officers from Kisii Central Police Station arrived to calm the situation.
