A robbery attempt in Oyugis town, Homa Bay County, ended tragically after a local businessman fought back, overpowering a gang of five suspects and killing one of them during a confrontation.
According to police reports, the incident occurred late in the evening when the suspects targeted the businessman’s butchery. Witnesses said the gang stormed into the premises and demanded money, causing panic at the shop.
In the ensuing chaos, the businessman, who was armed with an axe, defended himself against the attackers. He struck one of the suspects during the struggle, inflicting fatal injuries.
The remaining four suspects managed to flee the scene after allegedly making away with Sh30,000 from the shop.
Police officers arrived shortly after the incident and secured the area. The body of the deceased suspect was taken to a nearby mortuary pending identification and a postmortem examination.
Authorities have since launched investigations and are pursuing the suspects who escaped.
The incident has heightened concerns among residents of Oyugis, who say cases of robbery targeting small businesses have been on the rise, especially at night.
Traders expressed fear over their safety, noting that many operate late hours and are often vulnerable to criminal gangs.
Community members have called on the police to intensify patrols and improve security in the area.
Police officials assured residents that additional patrols would be deployed to restore calm and deter further criminal activity.
