Veteran radio presenter Festus Amimo, Head of Radio at Mayienga FM under the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), has died unexpectedly, the station confirmed on Sunday, December 7.
Amimo, renowned for his commanding voice and engaging on-air presence, passed away just hours after posting a heartfelt tribute to a close friend on social media. He was widely respected for hosting the popular Mayienga FM morning show, Gari Mokinyi.
In a statement, Mayienga FM described the loss as shocking and remembered Amimo as a dedicated professional whose passion for radio was unparalleled.
“It is with profound shock, deep sorrow, and heavy hearts that we announce the untimely passing of our head of station, Festus Amimo,” the station posted.
Friends, colleagues, and family members joined in mourning the seasoned broadcaster. Interior PS Raymond Omollo expressed his grief, describing the death as sudden and deeply painful.
“Festus was a warm soul, a steady presence, and a true friend whose kindness and humility touched everyone around him,” Omollo said.
Other radio stations, particularly those broadcasting in Dholuo, also paid tribute. Radio Namlolwe extended condolences to the late broadcaster, highlighting his influence and professionalism.
Just two days before his passing, on December 5, Amimo had shared a message mourning the death of his close friend, Rose Yier, writing: “We have this evening lost a friend. RIP.”
Beyond his work at KBC, Amimo served as Chair of the Luo Journalists Association, where he mentored young journalists and left a lasting impact on the media community. The cause of his sudden death has not yet been disclosed.
