United Opposition Leaders Pay Tribute to Kenya’s Freedom Heroes Ahead of Jamhuri Day

United Opposition leaders on Thursday came together for a special conference honouring the spirit of Jamhuri Day, which will be celebrated on December 12.

Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka emphasized that Jamhuri Day is far more than a public holiday, calling it “the crown jewel of sovereignty.” He said the day serves as a powerful reminder of Kenya’s long journey to independence.

He noted that Jamhuri Day is a moment to reflect on the struggles, sacrifices, and triumphs of the country’s freedom fighters.

“Today, we gather not simply to mark a date on the calendar, but to stand in solemn witness to the blood, courage, and sacrifice that built this Republic. Sixty-two years ago, Kenya shed the chains of foreign rule and stepped boldly into self-determination. A year later, on December 12, 1964, we became a republic—led and defended by the sons and daughters of this land,” Kalonzo said.

The event drew several key leaders, including DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua, DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa, and former CS Justin Muturi, among others.

The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to honouring Kenya’s founding heroes and preserving the values that shaped the nation’s independence.
