Environmental activist Truphena Muthoni has successfully completed her remarkable 72-hour tree-hugging challenge, marking a major milestone in her conservation journey and setting herself up for a new world record.
The 22-year-old began the marathon on Monday, December 8, 2025, outside the Nyeri governor’s office. Supporters, county officials, and curious residents gathered throughout the challenge to cheer her on.
Muthoni aimed to surpass her previous personal record of 48 hours, achieved in February 2025. But she made it clear from the start that this challenge was about much more than endurance.
She described the act of hugging a tree as a form of silent protest against deforestation, a call to protect indigenous forests, and a powerful message about mental health healing through reconnecting with nature.
“The reason for hugging trees is that it's therapeutic. We have a lot of mental health crises across the world that are directly connected to environmental degradation,” Truphena said.
Over the 72 hours, she battled heavy rains, chilly nights, fatigue, and physical strain—all without food, water, or breaks. A group of environmental activists supported her with a rotating playlist of music meant to lift her spirits and keep the atmosphere positive.
Her effort attracted widespread support from locals, environmental advocates, and national leaders.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua encouraged her warmly, praising her courage and commitment.
“Push on, my daughter,” he said on Wednesday. “Your resolve not only breaks records but also spreads awareness on environmental conservation and mental health. Your efforts remind the world to take care of our common home.”
Nyeri Governor Kahiga Mutahi and Deputy Governor Kinaniri Waroe also visited to witness her determination firsthand. The governor launched the official countdown on Monday and expressed pride in her unwavering dedication.
With cheers, hugs, and applause marking the end of the challenge, Muthoni’s achievement stands as both a symbol of resilience and a powerful message on the urgent need for environmental protection.
