Courtney Clenney, who was accused of killing 27-year-old Christian Obumseli in April 2022, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in court on Monday, August 10, 2026.
Clenney had initially been charged with second-degree murder, a charge that could have resulted in up to 30 years in prison if she had been convicted.
Under the plea agreement, however, she was sentenced to six years in prison followed by five years of probation. She will also be required to undergo a mental health evaluation and receive treatment.
Because Clenney has already spent about four years in custody since her arrest in 2022, she is expected to serve only around two more years behind bars. Her lawyers estimate that the actual time could be between 18 and 20 months.
The case attracted widespread attention, especially after old social media posts allegedly showing Obumseli making negative comments about Black women and expressing a preference for white women resurfaced following his death.
During Monday's court proceedings, Clenney appeared calm while accepting the plea agreement. However, she became emotional when Obumseli's mother addressed the court and spoke about the pain of losing her son.
Obumseli's mother described the loss as something that would continue affecting her long after the court proceedings ended. She spoke about birthdays, holidays, conversations and the future moments she would never experience with her son.
Following the hearing, Clenney's lawyers and parents held a press conference. Her defense attorney, Frank Prieto, described the plea agreement as a "common sense" decision.
Clenney's father, Kim Clenney, also expressed relief that the case had finally reached an ending after more than four years. He said he was looking forward to the day his daughter would be released and that he could sit with her, hug her and tell her how much he loved her.
Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle said the agreement had been reached after consultation with and approval from Obumseli's family.
The State Attorney's Office said the prosecution remained focused on evidence that Clenney stabbed Obumseli during what prosecutors described as a pattern of escalating violence.
Authorities had previously described Obumseli as a victim of domestic violence and characterized the relationship between the two as highly troubled and confrontational.
Clenney's defense team, however, maintained that she had been the victim of an abusive relationship and that she stabbed Obumseli in self-defense.
During an interview with detectives, Clenney said she grabbed a knife and warned Obumseli to stay away from her, claiming she had no intention of using the weapon.
Prosecutors disputed her account and pointed to evidence they said showed a history of aggressive behavior toward Obumseli. Videos obtained by NBC6 in 2022 and 2024 were also cited as part of the prosecution's case.
Clenney remained in jail without bond while the case continued through the courts for several years.
The legal battle also expanded beyond the murder case after prosecutors accused Clenney and her parents of accessing Obumseli's laptop, resulting in computer-related charges.
However, those charges were later dropped after a judge ruled that prosecutors had improperly accessed evidence protected by attorney-client privilege.
Following Clenney's sentencing, the case has continued to generate debate online. Some people have expressed the view that her sentence was too short, while others have continued defending her and pointing to Obumseli's previous comments about Black women.
The case has therefore remained highly controversial, with discussions continuing around domestic violence, self-defense, race, social media comments and the punishment handed down by the court.
