President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has asked Seoul to consider providing additional air-defense systems to help Ukraine defend against Russian missile and drone attacks, including strikes involving ballistic missiles supplied by North Korea.
Kyiv is also seeking closer cooperation with South Korea on drone technology. This could include sharing expertise as well as joint development and production of advanced unmanned systems.
The request comes as Russia intensifies its missile and drone attacks against Ukraine, while North Korea is reportedly providing greater military support to Moscow.
For South Korea, however, the issue is highly sensitive. Supplying advanced air-defense equipment to Ukraine could put Seoul more directly on the opposing side of a conflict in which North Korea is supporting Russia.
South Korean authorities have maintained a cautious approach, emphasizing that any military equipment transfer must comply with the country’s laws.
The developments are creating an increasingly important strategic triangle: North Korea is supporting Russia, Ukraine is turning to South Korea for defensive capabilities, and Seoul is being pressured to respond to weapons linked to Pyongyang.
