For nearly a decade, everyone believed the child was a boy.
According to reports, an Afghan father made the difficult decision to raise his daughter as a boy for almost 10 years so she could attend school, move around freely, and enjoy opportunities that are often denied to girls in parts of Afghanistan.
The practice, commonly known as bacha posh, has existed in the country for generations. Under this tradition, some families dress their daughters in boys' clothing, give them male names, and allow them to live as boys during childhood.
