Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council Chairman, Rashad al-Alimi, has said his government has made every effort to reopen Sanaa International Airport in a way that allows Yemeni citizens to travel through legal and internationally recognized channels.
According to al-Alimi, the Houthi movement has opposed those efforts, instead seeking to use the airport for flights that primarily benefit its leadership while allowing Iranian-linked aviation activities to operate outside the authority and sovereignty of the Yemeni state.
The Yemeni leader also accused the Houthis of attempting to pull the country into what he described as Iran’s “futile wars.” He claimed the group’s actions are increasing regional tensions and are aimed at threatening international maritime shipping routes and disrupting global energy supplies. The remarks come amid continued conflict in Yemen and ongoing concerns over security in the Red Sea, where attacks linked to the Houthis have raised fears about the safety of commercial shipping and the stability of international trade.
The Houthis have previously maintained that their operations are connected to the broader regional conflict and support for Palestinians in Gaza, while the internationally recognized Yemeni government and its allies argue that the attacks undermine regional security and Yemen’s sovereignty.
