An office belonging to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) was on Monday, May 18, 2026, set ablaze in Wote town, Wote, as nationwide protests over rising fuel prices escalated into violence and widespread destruction of property. WATCH THE VIDEO HERE.
Eyewitness accounts and circulating videos showed groups of angry youths storming the UDA party premises, vandalising offices, breaking windows, and looting before setting parts of the building on fire. Thick smoke was later seen rising from the structure as onlookers gathered at a distance.
The incident unfolded amid heightened tensions during demonstrations linked to the increasing cost of fuel, which has triggered disruptions in transport and business activities across several towns in the country.
Police officers who were deployed to manage the situation were seen attempting to contain the crowd and guide party officials and staff away from the scene as the situation turned volatile.
However, the protesters overwhelmed parts of the security response, forcing some individuals to retreat to safety as the building went up in flames.
By the time the fire was brought under control, significant damage had already been reported. Authorities later confirmed that no injuries had been recorded, though property of unknown value was destroyed in the inferno.
The targeted office belongs to United Democratic Alliance, which has been at the center of political criticism from sections of protesters who associate the ongoing fuel price crisis with government policy decisions.
The Wote incident was among several disruptions reported on the same day, with other cases of vandalism and vehicle burning also emerging in different parts of the country as demonstrations intensified.
The protests, which began earlier in the morning, caused major disruptions to transport systems and business operations, particularly in Nairobi and other urban centers, as motorists and traders expressed frustration over rising fuel costs.
Authorities have since increased patrols in affected areas in an effort to restore order and prevent further escalation as tensions remain high.
