Kenya Railways Reveals Madaraka Express Fare Structure for Nairobi–Mombasa Route

Passengers using the Madaraka Express between Nairobi and Mombasa now have a clearer understanding of travel costs after Kenya Railways released a detailed fare guide covering different classes and stations.

According to the updated structure, ticket prices vary depending on the class selected and the distance travelled, offering flexibility for both long-distance and short-distance passengers.

For a full journey from Nairobi to Mombasa:
Economy Class passengers pay KSh 1,500
First Class tickets cost KSh 4,500
Premium Class is priced at KSh 12,000
A Premium return ticket goes for KSh 20,000

The pricing system increases gradually with distance. For example, short trips such as Nairobi to Athi River cost as little as KSh 90 in Economy Class, making it an affordable option for nearby travel.

Fares rise progressively through stops like Emali, Kibwezi, Mtito Andei, and Voi before reaching the full Nairobi–Mombasa rate. First Class and Premium Class follow the same structure but at higher rates, with a Nairobi–Athi River trip costing KSh 180 and KSh 480 respectively.

The railway also maintains lower fares for travel between intermediate stations. For instance, a passenger travelling from Emali to Kibwezi pays around KSh 210 in Economy Class, reinforcing the train’s role as a practical regional transport option.

Meanwhile, the Nairobi–Suswa commuter line continues to provide affordable daily transport, with fares ranging between KSh 130 and KSh 250, benefiting workers and small-scale traders around the capital.

Kenya Railways has also issued a warning to passengers over rising cases of ticket fraud, urging travellers to use only official booking channels to avoid being scammed.

With its structured and transparent pricing, the Madaraka Express remains a key transport link in Kenya, helping passengers plan their journeys efficiently while offering reliable and cost-effective travel.
