Residents of Tinderet are counting their blessings after a grieving family narrowly escaped death when a massive rock crashed into their house just hours after they returned from burying a relative.
The frightening incident occurred late in the evening, leaving neighbours shocked and the family shaken but grateful to be alive.
Rock Rolled Down After Heavy Rains
According to residents, the huge rock rolled down from a nearby hillside following heavy rains that have recently pounded parts of Nandi County. The boulder smashed into the house with a loud bang, tearing through the roof and damaging sections of the walls.
Parts of the structure were left completely destroyed after the impact.
At the time of the incident, the family members were inside the house resting after a long and emotional day attending the burial ceremony of their relative.
Fortunately, none of them was injured because they were seated in another section of the house when the rock struck.
Family Heard a Thunderous Crash
One family member recalled hearing a thunderous sound moments before the house shook violently.
Panicked, they rushed outside as the damaged structure continued to crumble.
Neighbours who heard the loud crash quickly rushed to the scene, fearing the worst when they saw the huge rock lodged inside the house.
Many residents described the incident as nothing short of a miracle, noting that the rock could easily have killed several people if it had landed where the family was seated.
Safety Concerns Raised
Local residents have linked the incident to the ongoing heavy rains, which may have loosened rocks and soil on nearby hills, increasing the risk of landslides in the area.
Community members have now raised concerns about the safety of houses built near steep slopes and hillsides.
Local leaders who visited the scene called for an urgent assessment of the area to prevent similar incidents in the future.
They also urged residents living near hillsides to remain vigilant during the rainy season when the ground becomes unstable.
Authorities have been asked to conduct geological surveys to identify dangerous zones where such disasters could occur.
Family Appeals for Assistance
The affected family is now seeking assistance from well-wishers and local authorities to repair the damaged house.
Despite the destruction, the family says they remain grateful to have survived the terrifying incident as they continue mourning their departed relative.
Residents have also been advised to report any signs of shifting rocks, landslides, or cracks on nearby hills to authorities for immediate action.
