Tension gripped the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) on Tuesday after Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi openly challenged the party’s current direction, heightening fears of a looming internal split.
The charged meeting exposed deep-seated divisions within the party, particularly between the established leadership and the emerging “Linda Mwananchi” faction.
Osotsi, who attended and presented a dissenting agenda, directly questioned the party’s evolving political alignment and warned against drifting away from its foundational ideals.
Clash Over Party Identity
During the session, Osotsi invoked Raila Odinga, referencing the former Prime Minister’s often-quoted question, “Who told you?” — transforming it into a pointed call for self-examination among party leaders.
He emphasized that ODM must safeguard its identity even as it continues collaboration with the government under the broad-based framework.
A key point of contention was the controversial 10-point agreement with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA). Osotsi expressed dissatisfaction over what he termed a lack of sincerity from coalition partners as the March 7 timeline approaches.
He also criticized attempts to remove Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, describing the move as an effort to silence dissent within the party.
According to Osotsi, sidelining Sifuna goes beyond leadership restructuring — it raises serious questions about ODM’s internal democracy.
Countdown to the NDC
With the National Delegates Conference (NDC) set for March 27, Osotsi’s bold stance signals that the “Linda Mwananchi” faction intends to remain vocal and active.
His remarks have effectively challenged ODM’s leadership to choose between reconciliation and risking a deeper rift.
As Kenya’s political landscape continues to shift, the unfolding developments within ODM could significantly shape the party’s future direction and its role in national politics.
