Ruto and Matiang’i Clash Over Diet Remarks Amid Political Tensions

A fresh war of words has emerged between President William Ruto and Jubilee Deputy Party leader Fred Matiang'i following remarks about personal diet and health.

Speaking on Tuesday, March 17, during the launch of Jubilee Party offices in Narok, Matiang’i dismissed concerns about his eating habits, stating that he does not rely on food prepared by First Lady Rachel Ruto.

“I don’t understand why you are concerned about what I eat. I don’t ask for food from your home. I eat bananas from Kisii and ugali,” Matiang’i said, while also questioning the President’s noticeable weight loss.

In response, President Ruto addressed the remarks on Wednesday, March 18, saying there is nothing wrong with eating bananas but advised moderation.

“There is nothing wrong with eating bananas—I also eat them—but reduce the portions. If you were eating at my home, I would still reduce your portions just as I do with mine,” Ruto stated.

Exchange Fueled by Opposition Criticism

The verbal exchange comes amid heightened political tension involving opposition leaders. Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua had earlier mocked Ruto over his weight loss, claiming it was due to pressure from the opposition.

“He has all that money but cannot sleep. You can even see how much weight he has lost,” Gachagua remarked.

Ruto had earlier fired back, urging his critics to maintain fitness and avoid overeating.
“Go to the gym. Stop eating too much—you even fall asleep during meetings,” he said.

The exchange highlights the growing political rivalry and sharp rhetoric among Kenya’s leaders as the country edges closer to the 2027 elections.
