Kisumu Woman Representative and Ruth Odinga has stirred mixed reactions after declaring that leadership of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) should remain within the Odinga family.
In a statement on Sunday, March 22, 2026, Ruth emphasised the importance of continuity in the party’s leadership, citing the Odinga family’s long-standing role in shaping ODM’s identity and political direction.
“The ODM party leadership should remain within the Odinga family. Oburu is the party leader, and if he is tired of ODM leadership, he should leave it to Raila Junior. Even I can be a party leader but it is not going anywhere else,” she stated.
Her remarks have sparked debate both within the party and among the public, with supporters viewing the call as a way to preserve stability, while critics question whether it aligns with democratic principles and inclusivity.
The statement comes as discussions around succession and the future leadership of ODM gain momentum ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Within ODM, the remarks have further fueled conversations on internal democracy, leadership transition, and the role of legacy in shaping the party’s future.
Ruth has recently been vocal on issues affecting ODM, including unity, factionalism, and strengthening the party ahead of pre-election coalitions.
Her latest comments add another dimension to the ongoing debate about the party’s direction as it prepares for the next electoral cycle.
