Former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju has officially lost ownership of the Dari Coffee and Garden Restaurant in Karen after the property was auctioned for KSh 450 million, following a prolonged legal dispute over an unpaid loan.
The luxury restaurant, set on 6.9 acres in Nairobi’s upscale Karen suburb, was renowned for fine dining, corporate events, and social gatherings.
The venue featured well-manicured gardens, spacious conference areas, and a serene environment, attracting high-end clientele.
Auction Details
The auction was conducted publicly by Garam Auctioneers on October 1, 2025.
Multiple bidders reportedly competed, with the winning bid set at Sh450 million.
The successful bidder paid a deposit of Sh45 million, with the remaining balance expected within 90 days.
Background of the Loan Dispute
The sale follows Tuju’s default on a loan obtained from the East African Development Bank (EADB) in 2015. The loan, valued at around $9.3 million, was intended to finance land acquisition and development for hospitality and housing projects.
The bank moved to recover the debt after the facility reportedly went unpaid, sparking years of litigation.
Despite Tuju’s attempts to challenge the auction in court, the sale proceeded, marking a major setback for the former Jubilee Party Secretary General.
