Oscar Sudi Sparks Reactions After Encouraging “Tutam” Chants at Burial Attended by Opposition Leaders

Leaders from both the government and the opposition on Saturday, March 14, attended the burial ceremony of George Were, a retired Lieutenant Colonel and veteran pilot who died in a tragic helicopter crash on February 28.

Among the opposition leaders present were Eugene Wamalwa and Martha Karua, who joined family members, friends, and residents in paying their last respects to the fallen pilot.

During the burial ceremony, Oscar Sudi, the Member of Parliament for Kapseret, was heard interacting with mourners who had begun chanting “Tutam,” a slogan widely associated with supporters of William Ruto and his government.

Sudi asked the crowd what they were chanting, which prompted even louder chants from the mourners. He then encouraged them to chant more loudly so that opposition leaders present at the ceremony could hear them clearly.

Also present at the burial was Raymond Omollo, the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Interior.
The late George Were was the pilot of the ill-fated helicopter, registration number 5Y-DSB, which crashed and burst into flames in the Chepkiep area of Nandi County.

The tragic accident claimed six lives, including that of Johanna Ng'eno, leaving the nation mourning the loss of experienced leaders and professionals.

The burial ceremony brought together leaders from across the political divide as they gathered to honor the life and service of the veteran pilot.
