Mozambique President Daniel Chapo Begins Three-Day Visit to Kenya

The President of Mozambique, Daniel Francisco Chapo, has begun a three-day official visit to Kenya following an invitation from President William Ruto.

President Chapo arrived in Nairobi on March 24, 2026, where he was received at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.

The visit is expected to focus on strengthening bilateral relations between the two nations, with key discussions centered on trade, investment, and regional cooperation.

According to Mudavadi, the engagement will provide an opportunity for both leaders to review existing partnerships and explore new areas of collaboration.

During his stay, President Chapo will attend the Kenya International Investment Conference (KIICO) as the guest of honour. The conference, which will be held at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre, is expected to attract global investors, policymakers, and business leaders.

Mozambique is expected to use the platform to showcase its investment opportunities and attract foreign investors. Officials say the visit will also help strengthen economic ties and encourage private sector partnerships between the two countries.

The visit builds on ongoing cooperation under the Kenya–Mozambique Joint Permanent Commission for Cooperation (JPCC), which has been in place since 1991.

Over the years, the partnership has expanded to include sectors such as agriculture, education, energy, defence, and trade.

Mudavadi noted that previous engagements, including the JPCC session held in Maputo in 2023, resulted in the signing of several agreements aimed at boosting collaboration.

He emphasized the importance of implementing these agreements to ensure meaningful outcomes for both countries.

The Kenyan government also highlighted the need to improve connectivity between the two nations, especially following the resumption of direct flights between Nairobi and Maputo in 2024.

Improved transport links are expected to enhance trade, tourism, and people-to-people interactions.
Beyond economic cooperation, both countries are also looking to deepen collaboration in areas such as counterterrorism, maritime security, digital transformation, and tourism. These sectors are seen as key to driving long-term development and regional integration.

President Chapo’s visit comes at a time when African countries are increasingly seeking to strengthen intra-continental partnerships amid global economic uncertainties.

Leaders from both nations expressed optimism that the engagement will deliver practical outcomes and reinforce their longstanding relationship.
