Mithika Linturi Declares Bid for Meru Governor, Backed by United Opposition Leaders

Former Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture, Mithika Linturi, has officially announced his intention to run for Meru Governor, pledging to unseat the incumbent in the upcoming 2027 elections.

The declaration was made at a lively morning rally in Meru, attended by prominent political figures including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, and other leaders of the United Opposition.

Addressing the cheering crowd, Linturi expressed confidence in his campaign, emphasizing his commitment to transformative leadership and service to the people of Meru.

“I have always believed in putting citizens first, and today I take a decisive step to offer Meru residents a government that truly serves their interests,” he stated.

Linturi will contest under the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), led by Gachagua, highlighting the opposition’s strategy to consolidate support across key political bases.

He also pledged to launch a grassroots campaign immediately to ensure his message reaches every corner of the county.

The rally showcased the unity of opposition leaders, signaling a coordinated effort to challenge the current county administration.

Linturi’s campaign is expected to focus on infrastructure development, agriculture modernization, and youth empowerment — areas he says have been neglected by the current leadership.

Political observers note that Linturi’s early declaration could be a tactical move to gain momentum and rally supporters ahead of other candidates formally entering the race. His national-level experience and high-profile endorsements give him significant visibility in Meru politics.

As the gubernatorial race takes shape, all eyes will be on Meru to see if Linturi can translate opposition backing and his leadership experience into a winning strategy at the county level.
