Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi has announced that Homa Bay leaders have reached a consensus to support County Governor Gladys Wanga for a second term.
Speaking during an interdenominational church service in Homa Bay on Sunday, March 22, 2026, CS Mbadi emphasized that no member of the broad-based team would interfere with the ODM chairperson as she seeks re-election in 2027.
“As leaders from this region, we are united. We do not want disruptions. We have decided to support the current leadership and allow our governor to serve a second term,” CS Mbadi stated.
Mbadi, who attempted to contest the gubernatorial seat in 2022 but lost to Wanga during the party nominations, reaffirmed that Homa Bay leaders are committed to ensuring peace within the county’s governance structure.
He further highlighted that leaders like himself and Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, who hails from Homa Bay, would support the county’s administration.
“As the leadership of this region, we want peace, and we will ensure harmony within our party, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), and its governance structures. Even those at the national level, like Raymond Omollo and myself, must support the leadership of the county,” he said.
Homa Bay gubernatorial race
The Homa Bay gubernatorial seat continues to attract strong interest. The latest contender is former Deputy Governor Oyugi Magwanga, who resigned after a fallout with Wanga and has declared his intention to contest the 2027 elections.
Former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero, who unsuccessfully contested for the seat in 2022, has not yet declared whether he will return to Homa Bay or vie for office in Nairobi.
He was recently spotted at a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) aspirants’ forum at State House, wearing party regalia.
CS Mbadi also stated that the Nyanza region should produce a presidential candidate once William Ruto exits office, signaling the region’s growing political significance.
