Laikipia University Student Dies in Hiking Accident at Subukia View Point

Laikipia University has announced the tragic death of a first-year student, Hillary Vulimu, who lost his life during a hiking excursion in Nyandarua County.

In a statement released on Saturday, March 21, the university identified Hillary as a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and Media student. The accident occurred on Friday, March 20, 2026, at Subukia View Point when he was struck by a rock while hiking with fellow students.

Fellow students acted swiftly, transporting him to Michael Nursing Home in Subukia for immediate care before he was referred to Nyahururu County Referral Hospital. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Hillary passed away while receiving treatment.

The Dean of Students and university officials moved quickly to support both the family and affected students, ensuring necessary arrangements at the hospital and communicating with Hillary’s parents.

The university expressed profound sorrow over the loss and urged the community to come together in mourning while offering support to the bereaved family.

Officials also issued a safety advisory, warning students against venturing into risky areas, particularly during the rainy season when trails may be hazardous, and discouraged sharing content related to the incident to protect the family’s privacy.

This tragedy comes just days after another fatal incident involving three Kenyatta University students who died in a matatu accident along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway in Kibwezi.

The university’s statement emphasized the need for caution during outdoor activities and support for the community in this period of grief.
