KCAA Confirms Petrol Station Construction Near JKIA Flight Path Complies With Safety Regulations

The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) has clarified public concerns over the construction of a petrol station near the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) flight path.

In a statement issued on Monday, March 9, the authority emphasized that the development along Mombasa Road underwent the required evaluation processes and received approval in line with aviation safety regulations.

"Attention has been drawn via social media to an ongoing construction of a petrol station at JKIA’s flight path. The development referenced near JKIA along Mombasa Road has undergone the required review and analysis and has been granted approval as required by the Regulations," the statement read.

KCAA highlighted that any project within or around an airport’s operational environment must pass through stringent safety checks and regulatory procedures before approval is granted.

"It should be noted that all project/development proposals at or in the vicinity of the aerodrome are subjected to due process and established aviation safety protocols by KCAA," the authority added.

Context and Background

The clarification comes months after the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) addressed concerns over a viral video showing a convoy of SUVs accessing the restricted airside area at JKIA.

According to KAA, the incident occurred on October 8, 2025, for the official motorcade of a Prime Minister from an African country attending the 24th COMESA Summit in Nairobi.

"All airside access for this VIP protocol strictly followed established security procedures and regulations, reserved for state and diplomatic dignitaries," KAA confirmed, noting that such protocols are standard during international summits to ensure operational integrity and dignitary safety.

This dual clarification from KCAA and KAA underscores that aviation safety and security remain a priority, even as developments and state protocols occur within JKIA’s operational environment.
